Macedonian Ambassador to Athens Darko Angelov will tomorrow meet with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kodzias. Angelov is one of the first ambassadors with whom Kodzias is meeting after taking over the office from previous foreign minister, Evangelos Venizelos.
The meeting between Angelov and Kodzias will be an opportunity the Ambassador to familiarize with the new minister and it comes at the request of the Macedonian side. The formal meeting will also be used as an opportunity for Angelov to hand over the official notification letter for his assuming the ambassador function of the Liaison Office of Macedonia in Athens.
Since taking office, Kodzias have met with the ambassadors of the US, Germany and the Ukraine, and the following on the list is the Macedonian ambassador. After the meeting with Angelov, Kodzias will also meet the Turkish Ambassador in Athens.
In January, just before the Greek parliamentary elections, Angelov met with former Deputy Minister for European Affairs Dimitris Kourkoulas. Their protocol meeting went in a good mood and with a friendly conversation about the possibility of intensifying cooperation between the two countries.
The meeting between the Ambassador and Kodzias comes just several days after the meeting of Kodzias with German Minister of Foreign Affairs, on which, according to speculation in the Greek media, he asked from Germany to push Macedonia for a compromise, a mutually acceptable solution. “Kathimerini” commented that it is possible for Greece to launch new initiatives for dialogue with the Western Balkan countries in the forthcoming period.
As a reminder, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras this week clearly drew the red lines of the Greek side regarding name dispute, noting that Greece stands behind the requirements for a name with geographic determinant for general use, as well as that it is important for Greece solution to be found in the United Nations, a solution which will be mutually acceptable to both sides.
