Government withdraws the Law on Lake Ohrid and suggests moratorium on construction works in the area

-

During yesterday’s 146th session, the Government has made a decision to withdraw the Law on managing the natural and cultural heritage in the Ohrid region and has sent a recommendation to the municipalities to proclaim a moratorium on building activities until a Plan is made for managing the natural and cultural heritage.

As stated in the press release, during the cabinet session, the Government once again has confirmed the determination for preserving the Ohrid region’s status as a world heritage that is evidenced on UNESCO’s list.

At the same time, the government recommends that the the municipalities of Struga and Ohrid to prepare action plans, in a period of 10 days, with a deadline for the implementation of UNESCO’s recommendations regarding the municipalities’ authorisations and in a period of two days after the action plans are passed by the municipalities’ councils, to inform the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Environment and Space Planning.

These ministries were authorized by the Government to coordinate the interinstitutional activity for the implementation of UNESCO’s recommendations.
