The government held meeting at which it declared an emergency situation for the south and north borders due to the heightened influx of migrants in the country.
This was reported by Ivo Kotevski, deputy Minister of public relations of the Ministry of Interior at a press conference today. He added that according to the legal prescriptions, the Army of Republic of Macedonia (ARM) is tasked to secure the southern border.
Kotevski added that the goal of this measure by the Government is to increase the safety of the local population and to present a more humane and more adequate treatment for the migrants who have entered the country.
According to this decision, the government will form a headquarters in the Crisis Management Center and formulate an adequate action plan.
Kotevski didn’t respond precisely if Macedonia is closing its borders to illegal migrants coming from Greece. He said the decision by the government is to increase the control of the border and the border crossing.
