Only 72 hours before the end of the election campaign, Prime Minister of Greece Antonis Samaras is in Thessaloniki today in a last attempt to woo and charm voters from Northern Greece. During a visit to the second Greek capital, Samaras took the time to see Metropolitan Anthimos, known for the weekly sermons and nationalist propaganda against Macedonia.
– Each meeting with you is a great honor and pleasure for you are a Metropolitan full of passion, Metropolitan who is a preacher for our Christianity, preacher for the rights of Hellenism and our Macedonia – stated Samaras after the meeting with Anthimos.
This was the only, but not an irrelevant mention of Macedonia. Neither Samaras, nor Anthimos talked more about the name dispute in their statements for the press, although the Thessaloniki Metropolitan mentions the dispute at almost every Sunday liturgy.
Thessaloniki is usually the penultimate major station for political leaders and place where points about the name dispute are scored.
Uncertainty about the results still remains though there are only three days before the elections. SYRIZA lead with a landslide, but it is still questionable whether the final percentage of support will be higher or within what is seen from the polls, i.e. advantage of 3-4 percent and whether the party would find allies and support among other parties in the race to join the new composition of the Greek Parliament if it fails to raise an absolute majority to form a government.
According to surveys of the Greek media, there are still a large percentage of undecided voters. Figures of the survey for TV “Star” show that 20 percent of voters in the second constituency in Athens are undecided.
