Merkel invited Tsipras to tete-a-tete meeting

-

Alexis Tsipras will have a tete-a-tete meeting with Angela Merkel. Greek Prime Minister and the German Chancellor will meet next Monday in Berlin on Merkel’s proposal.

Iron Lady of the EU yesterday called Tsipras and proposed tete-a-tete meeting to discuss Greece’s financial situation.

The meeting comes at a moment when Germany was particularly irritated over statements by Minister Yannis Varoufakis against the policy of Berlin to Greek debt.

On the Greek side, Merkel’s initiative for a meeting is interpreted as a ray of hope and opportunity to find common ground and compromise between the Greek and European requirements in key moments when the technical details of a new loan agreement with the Greek are negotiated and European pressure on Greece continues to grow without having to show great understanding and leniency towards the policy of Tsipras’ government.

According to information in Greece, Tsipras hopes that this meeting will help in reaching a political solution to the financial problem, to show some support to Greece and to again establish trust after numerous negative statements from European officials for the new Greek government.

Greek media commented that as this meeting is necessary for Greece to show that Germany wants to support and help, it is likely that, despite the support, it is possible Merkel to offer last chance and proposals for rescuing Greece under its terms and a compromise that would be equally favorable or unfavorable for the Greek and European side, something that Tsipras should be well prepared in every aspect in order not to allow new Greek collapse. If Tsipras is put before such a proposal, according to Greek media, the dilemma is whether to put the country in an uncertain situation and lose part of European support, or agree to pay a political price for the cancellation of election promises and political program.

“Tsipras’ visit to Berlin will be the last window of opportunity for a way out of the impasse situation,” reports “Kathimerini”.

The information in the media from the German side is that the meeting is unlikely to magically solve all problems, but it can help both countries to embark on the road to a constructive dialogue instead of constantly being on the verge of disagreement.
