“We will change Europe”: Greeks support Tsipras on the squares

-

Thousands of Greek citizens gathered on the central square in Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras and other cities throughout Greece to support the government. This is a historic protest because Greece hasn’t seen a mass civil protest that supports government and its policies for more than three decades. Citizens gathered on public squares after the morning call on the social networks to get out on the street in protest over the decision of the European Central Bank to refuse Greek government bonds, a move interpreted as a new attempt for European pressure on Greece.
“We won’t let you blackmail us, we will not succumb,” “There’s no going back, we will win”, these were the main slogans of thousands of citizens, who stood before the Greek Parliament about two hours in support of the effort of Alexis Tsipras to deliver Greece from its poor financial situation. Citizens comment that people decided to return pride and will not allow the EU and European financial institutions to override that.
They completely support Tsipras and they are optimistic that he would manage to return to normal life. Most of the slogans express anger at the decisions of the European institutions to continue to push Greece, mainly turned to Germany. “We will change Europe”, “Schäuble and Merkel – you threaten, blackmail, steal, murder since 1941. We are not afraid of you,” are just some of the slogans on the posters expressing revolt against the attempt by the EU and the large financial institutions to continue with financial restraints over Greece and to discourage the new negotiation of the Greek Government on the debt.
