Global Voices report: Serbian security agencies looked to purchase Hacking Team software

-

A portion of the e-mails and the dossiers of the controversial Italian software company “Hacking Team” based in Milan, which were leaked by “Wikileaks” at the start of July this year , reveal that at least one Serbian security agencies had inquired or negotiated the purchase of a software designed to follow communications, says in the report by Global Voices which cites a paper by a Serbian non government organization released last month.

The report by Global Voices also mentions that in the materials leaked by Wikileaks there evidence of one or more e-mail address of the Serbian Defense Ministry as trial users of the spying software.

The software is of the “remote control system”, abbreviated RCS. According to the report of the NGO, the most frequent clients of “Hacking Team” were governments and security services around the world.

Meta previous reported that part of the electronic correspondence by the controversial Italian company contains official e-mail addresses from the Macedonian Ministry of Interior, domain name moi.gov.mk.

The Ministry of Interior (MVR) did not respond then whether it employs people whose e-mail addresses were listed as Government and intelligence services contacts that were exchanged by couple of Hacking Team employees. Minister of Interior Mitko Chavkov avoided to comment on the e-mail addresses that were leaked by Wikileaks and claim that the MVR has not purchased software from Hacking Team

In another e-mail exchange, a certain Aleksandar Chokovski, working in a company based in Skopje, who had introduced himself as a company  that wants to purchase tracking equipment for the Government of Macedonia, has solicited the purchase of a tracking system meant for the needs of the Customs department.

Soon after the article was published by Meta, Chokovski negated having purchased tracking equipment for the Customs from his Twitter. The tweet said that the entire communication that he was involved in was his gambit to get to the demo version of RCS Galileo. The Customs department also negated the claim that it has purchased communications tracking equipment, adding that the obtaining of such equipment had not been planned for the next three years.
