Turkey: 30 dead and 126 injured in attack in Ankara

Thirty dead and 126 injured are the latest numbers from today’s explosion in Ankara, announced the Turkish Ministry of Interior.

According to investigators, the explosions were the work of a suicide bomber. The Turkish government have assessed the attack as a terrorist act. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu convened an emergency meeting with representatives from the Ministry of Justice and Internal Affairs, the Head of the Turkish Police, the Intelligence Chief and the Governor of Ankara, Mehmet Kılıçlar .

Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland condemned the attack which occurred at the beginning of a peaceful protest organized against the conflict between the State and Kurdish militants.

“ This morning news from Ankara is shocking and distressing. What happened was cruel and was a barbaric attack on peaceful demonstrators. I want to express my condolences to all who lost friends and loved ones in the attack. Freedom of assembly and freedom of expression are fundamental pillars of Democracy” said Mr Jagland.
