With 15 votes “for” and 9 “against,” the Council of the Municipality of Bitola decided today to call a referendum where the citizens of Bitola to state their opinion about the draft- strategy for migrants.
A heated debate opened up about the date for holding the referendum. The opposition gave a proposal for the referendum to take place on the 1st of October, but the ruling majority in the Bitola Council didn’t accept the proposal and the referendum will occur on the 15th of October, on the day when the local elections are going to be organized.
The Minister of Labor and Social Policy, Mila Carovska, appeared unannounced at the Bitola’s Municipality Council during the debate regarding the referendum.
She gave a statement in the media that VMRO-DPMNE is telling lies and is spreading xenophobia.
-VMRO-DPMNE is spreading lies, it is spreading xenophobia and fake news. Macedonia will not be populated with refugees nor apartments will be built for them in Macedonia. They should come out and state the document with which the government has obliged itself to spend financial assets or has made documents for building apartments. The referendum mustn’t occur on the same day as the local elections because it will disrupt the process of electing a mayor in Bitola – said Carovska.
