The Bulgarian VMRO will leave the government if Sofia provides support for North Macedonia’s EU accession

-

The Bulgarian Vice Prime Minister in charge of Public Order and Safety and a Minister of Defense, and at the same time a president of the Bulgarian political party VMRO-BND, Krasimir Karakachanov, stated this weekend that he and his party will not support the North Macedonia’s membership into EU. He demanded that the Bulgarian government to take the same stance and in contrary, his party will leave the ruling coalition.

Karakachanov said that the reason for this decision is that North Macedonia doesn’t meet the demands made by the Good neighborly relations with Bulgaria regarding the ironing out the historical issues or by his own words “all forgeries from the history of the Bulgarian nation in North Macedonia.”

-The only right solution is to come out with a stance from the government’s cabinet. We see that North Macedonia hasn’t done enough to meet the requirement in the agreement between both countries and because of that we don’t want to support it. I don’t want to impose demands but I think this is the basis. If an agreement isn’t reached, my colleagues at the parliament will leave the government – said Karakachanov.

Karakachanov gave this statement before today’s consultative meeting at the government that was summoned by Bulgaria’s President Rumen Radev. Karakachev is one of the government’s representatives.
