Visit of delegation of PES in Macedonia

-

A delegation of the Party of European Socialists yesterday visited Macedonia. The delegation is led by Sergei Stanishev, President of PES. As informed by SDSM, at the meeting, it was discussed about the political situation in Macedonia.

– We thanked PES for solidarity shown to our country and to the citizens, especially emphasizing the quality of democracy and the issue of freedoms and rights of the citizens. Today we discuss the subject, which are the problems and possible solutions – said Radmila Shekerinska.

The delegation said that they visited Macedonia because they are worried about the situation. MEP Richard Howitt said that it is necessary to follow Copenhagen criteria, as expected of a candidate for EU membership.

– There is no negotiating for highest political criteria, such as freedom of the judiciary, freedom of the press, freedom of speech and, of course, the freedom of the opposition to criticize the Government. We are concerned about the allegations made against the opposition leader, Mr. Zoran Zaev. During our visit, we will talk not only with the leadership of SDSM, but also with representatives of civil society, representatives of the Government and other political parties. We are here to help the Macedonian society – said Howitt.

PES President Sergei Stanishev asks all security and judicial authorities in the country to respect fundamental rights, the principle of equality before the law and the presumption of innocence.

– I chose to come today with friends Socialists and Social Democrats to appropriately express concern that the rights and freedoms of friends Social Democrats, members of PES, in this country may be violated. But also, I’m here because I love and respect the country and its citizens, recognizing that this society is divided enough and we can play our part in helping to decrease these divisions – said Stanishev.
