The head of the Macedonian diplomatic delegation today in Brussels met with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini.
As announced by the Macedonian Foreign Ministry, the meeting focused on the prospects of the EU integration process of Macedonia, in light of the recent report from the European Commission. Mr Popovski welcomed the continued recommendation for a decision to start accession negotiations. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Macedonian Government in implementing the remaining obligations of the political agreement and reform priorities in key areas, noting that the expectation of the results in this domain must be decisive and finally to make the decision to open accession negotiations.
“We bear the responsibility for the success of political dialogue and reforms at home. However the EU has a responsibility in April to open the door for accession negotiations. If we are successful at home until the elections, and Brussels they shut their eyes, there will be no room for excuses for anyone”, Mr Popovski said.
The meeting focused on current developments in the field of foreign and security policy of the Union, including the migrant-refugee crisis.
“Macedonia will help in dealing with the refugee influx. We will help with implementing rules which member states have implemented to strengthen border controls, channelling and registration. The challenge for Europe now is to find comprehensive solutions that will work. The problem is that at the moment no one in Europe is willing to openly say what is Europe’s policy on this issue. We expect assistance from European partners to be channelled through the bodies and institutions who are directly dealing with this crisis on the ground. Dealing with challenges related to border security and control, and ensuring safe and humane treatment only to those refugees who have come from war torn countries, and they come to us from an EU country”, said Popovski.
