MOI: 617 migrants from Afghanistan stranded at Tabanovce as Serbia refuses them entry

-

Over 600 migrants from Afghanistan are currently stuck in the reception camp at the Macedonian-Serbian border-crossing of Tabanovce, after Serbia closed its border to migrants with citizenship from Afghanistan, the Ministry of Interior (MOI) told “Meta”.

The MOI, also told “Meta” that they deny the information from news agencies and some of the Greek media that Serbian and Macedonian authorities have stopped the stream of migrants and have stopped allowing Afghan nationals from Greece to enter Macedonia.

“All one has to do is look at the daily reports and see who has been issued certificates, and then one will see that yesterday and the day before, such documents have been issued to citizens from Afghanistan. Currently 617 Afghan nationals are stranded at the border-crossing at Tabanovce because Serbia refuses to allow them entry”, said for “Meta” Dejana Nedeljkovic, spokeswoman for the Interior Ministry.

Greek newspaper “Proto Tema” announced today that Macedonian authorities have started to refuse entry to migrants from Afghanistan, after Serbia stopped entry for Afghan nationals from Macedonia. The reason for this, the newspaper reports, is the new way of identification and registration for migrants. According to the Greek newspaper, not only must migrants have documentation from Greek authorities which was enough for them to cross until now, but they also need passports.

In Idomeni, on the Greek side of the border, according to the newspaper, at the moment there are about 1,000 migrants and another 3,000 waiting in Kilkis.
