Athens got angry with Hahn because in an interview for Spiegel he erroneously referenced the country as Macedonia and not FYROM

-

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affair issued an announcement regarding Commissioner Johannes Hahn’s numerous references to the name Macedonia instead of FYROM.

In a lengthy interview for the German magazine “Der Spiegel” Hahn has constantly used the name Macedonia whenever he addressed the negotiations for the country’s EU accession.

Athens has called on Hahn to “respect international legality”

„We call on Commissioner Hahn to respect international legality and to refrain from violating, among other things, the decisions and commitments of the European Union itself. Especially in the midst of the current critical juncture, with relevant negotiations underway. His repeated slips do not contribute to the achievement of progress in the negotiations on the name issue. Nor are they consistent with the constructive role members of the European Commission must exert.“ – stated the Greek press reaction.
