MFA of North Macedonia warns nationals that fighting in foreign conflicts is crime

-

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia (MFA) reminded the country nationals that enlistment in any foreign army and participation in war conflicts abroad is crime according to North Macedonia regulations, i.e. according to the Criminal Code.

This reaction ensued after the Ukrainian Embassy in Skopje transmitted the call from the Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for joining the ranks of the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine.

The MFA of North Macedonia stated that as a friendly country to Ukraine, there is an understanding about the dire situation that Ukraine is in, which pushes the Ukrainian authorities to call for any help from all the friendly countries.

“At the same time, we are reminding that North Macedonia condemns completely Russia’s aggression on Ukraine and this country has demonstrated that in the UN, NATO, OSCE and in all other bilateral and multilateral forums,” stressed the MFA.

Meta.mk already informed that the participation in any foreign legion ofr Macedonian nationals is banned by Article 322-a of the Criminal Code, that bans participation of Macedonian nationals in any army or other types of foreign military or police formations.

MOI informed Portalb that in the period between 2014 and 2021, 11 felonies “participation in foreign armies, police, paramilitary and parapolice formations” were registered and 56 persons were prosecuted.
