In the aftermath of the tragic accident of the bus from North Macedonia which happened Tuesday night near the Bulgarian city of Pernik, experts and experienced drivers that regularly drive on the “Struma” motorway are asking many questions about traffic security and the road signs on the section.
Dimitar Iliev, a Bulgarian road safety expert, Wednesday morning analyzed the motorway section for bTV Novinite. He said that it is very important to put ourselves in the bus driver’s seat and find the clue about what he was seeing on the road in the moments preceding the accident, which took at least 44 lives. According to him, everybody has been looking only at the place of the accident, but, as Iliev says, the configuration of the road preceding the place of the accident ought to be analyzed..
At 500 meters before the crash location, there is a sign on the motorway setting the speed limit to 120 km/h, Iliev explains.
But, as he said for bTV Novinite, at 500 m before the place of the accident site, traffic sign that will inform the drivers that a parking zone (the exact location of the tragic crash) is up ahead is totally missing. In Dimitar Iliev’s analysis, which was made with the help of recordings on Google Maps on the highway itself, he says that before the parking location there was only a road sign for vignettes, but not a road sign that will give information that the road is dividing, with additional stop lane.
Before the accident location, there are faint remains of a double yellow road line, analyzed Iliev. During rainfall and in the nighttime, it is questionable whether the road line was visible to the driver.
Krum Donchev, a four-time car rally champion of Bulgaria, in the same show criticized the road signs on the location where the accident has happened.
In the last moments that the driver has had, he saw a road sign for a water tap sign and a junction, and there is a hesitation whether to turn left or right. In front of him another sign shows up, which is placed irregularly i.e. it is placed too high and on top of it there is an ad sticker on it,” said Donchev.
