The Ombudsman reacts regarding the ban of pupils wearing headscarves in school

Today, the Ombudsman announced that he condemns the procedure of the Ministry of Education and Science, which, as it was quoted, the Principal of the Primary School “Bratstvo i Edinstvo” in Ohrid in writing, was enable to ban the pupils to attend classes because they were wearing headscarves.

The Ombudsman seeks immediate withdrawal of this decision and allow the pupils to attend the classes.

“The Constitution of the Republic of Macedonia and the European Convention on Human Rights foresee and allow freedom of religion and freedom of expression of religion, and according to the Convention regarding the Rights of the Child, the freedom of expression of religion is only under the restrictions provided by law, and such restrictions are not predicted with the Law for Primary Education and other legal regulations”, says the Ombudsman’s Office statement.

The Ombudsman requires the Laws to be obeyed consistently and obligatory application of the ratified international acts, as an integral part of the Macedonian legal order.
