Hungary: Three years prison for migrants who cross the border illegaly

There will be sharper punishment for refugees and migrants who will cross the state border illegaly, says the Hungarian government following their proposal for a law.

The government has proposed 13 measures for more efficient dealing with the wave of migrants. The laws include a three year prison sentence for migrants who are caught crossing the Hungarian border.

Another law suggests stronger punishment for people who who are caught smuggling migrants.

There are other measures that offer the establishment of a “transit zone” at the border for those seeking exile, so that they have more time to gather and submit their documents and application.

This bill will be treated in Parliament next week. If it is passed, it will come to fore on September 15.

More than 100,000 migrants have entered Hungary from Balkan countries. Most of the migrants come from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
