New US ambassador to Macedonia arrived

New US Ambassador Jess Bailey arrived in Macedonia, announced US Embassy in Skopje on its Facebook page.

Bailey is a career diplomat in the rank of Minister-Counselor and he is part of the US State Department from 1985. He comes in Skopje from Ankara, Turkey, where he was deputy head of the US Embassy from 2011.

Before that, Bailey was Director of Southeastern Europe at the State Department, responsible for bilateral relations with Turkey, Greece and Cyprus. In his rich career, he was Director of the Office of Political Affairs of the United Nations, Head of the Regional Reconstruction Team of Erbil, Kurdistan Region in Iraq, and Director of the Press Centre of Foreign Affairs in Washington. He worked in the embassies in The Hague, Netherlands as an advisor for public relations and was an adviser for cultural affairs, as well as spokesman at the embassy in Ankara.

Prior to joining the State Department, he worked at the US Information Agency (USIA) and in the embassies in Thailand, Senegal and Bangladesh.

Born in Cincinnati, Bailey graduated from Yale University, and obtained his Master’s degree in European history at Columbia University. He speaks French, Turkish and Thai language. He is married and has one son.

New US Ambassador replaces Ambassador Paul D. Wohlers, who was in Macedonia from 13th of September 2011.
