MPM cut wages while journalists protest

-

Journalists from newsrooms of three daily newspapers published by “Media Print Macedonia” (“Dnevnik”, “Utrinski vesnik”, “West”) today, at noon, held a protest in front of the company’s premises to express their discontent and resentment of the management’s decision to reduce staff salaries. The decision came into force today, and with it a sharp reduction in wage levels. Depending on employee status, this could mean a shortfall of 10%, 20% or even as high as  30%.

Before the protest, the President of the Union of Journalists and Media workers Tamara Chausidis stated that this decision further devalued and violated the economic, political and professional dignity of journalists in Macedonia.

“Today we came out to revolt and protest the decision to cut wages, which was published this morning on the bulletin board in the MPM. For a country that has successfully overcome the global economic crisis, and as we hear every day, is a leader in economic growth in Europe, it is unacceptable to reduce the salaries of journalists due to economic reasons. This increases insecurity among journalists at MPM and across Macedonia, which are already poorly paid in the region”, said Chausidis.
