Greece clearly said “no” to new austerity measures that would cast the country into a new recession. The first official results from the Ministry of Interior of about 20 percent of votes counted show that 60.4 percent of voters opposed the measures, while 39.5 percent support them. The opinions of the ministry are that votes “no” will exceed 61 percent by the end of the count.
The huge difference caused great surprise. Many voters are against the measures and supporters of SYRIZA are already gathering on Syntagma Square to celebrate the decision of the Greek people to turn their backs to strict austerity measures.
All eyes were turned to Brussels and awaiting to see how European leaders will respond to this shock from the Greek side.
