Last night, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece greeted the decision of the Macedonian government to rename the “Alexander the Macedonian” highway and the Skopje airport “Alexander the Great” into “Friendship” and “International airport Skopje.”

“We greet today’s decision of the government of the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia to rename the airport at Skopje into “International airport Skopje” and the highway that links Skopje with the border with Greece into “Highway of Friendship.” Today’s decision is a positive step towards abolishing what has happened in the previous decade and has contributed to creating tensions in the relations between both countries. This is an important development towards fighting irredentism and we are hoping that it will mark the beginning of a new chapter in the relations between both countries and both nations” said the press release issued by the Greek MFA.
