Brussels has not yet declared what steps will be taken due to the actions of President Gjorge Ivanov, when he granted over 50 politician mostly all under investigations, pardons, and by doing so, he violated the Przhino Agreement.
“In a statement issued last week, we said that we have been forced to consider further action to meet the requirements highlighted by the European Commission, the European Council and European Parliament. Last week I said it, and I will repeat it now, I will not speculate beyond that ”, said spokesperson for the European Commission, Maja Kocijančić at a press conference in Brussels.
The spokesperson said that Brussels clearly stated their views on the latest developments in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
“The situation for us is still at a high level of concern. We remain available, but, first and for most, we have said many times, the responsibility to resolve the current political crisis in the country remains in the hands of political leaders. We have expressed our concern”, said Kocijančić.
Last week, an attempt by Commissioner Johannes Hahn and the three MEPs, Eduard Kukan, Ivo Vajgl and Richard Howitt to organize a leadership meeting in Vienna with the signatories of the Przhino Agreement failed. Only the VMRO-DPMNE and the DUI had confirmed their attendance for the meeting, however the SDSM made demands for their appearance at the meeting, firstly the withdrawal of the pardons and secondly, the postponement the elections scheduled for June the 5th. The meeting unfortunately did not take place, and its aim was to save the Przhino Agreement.
The world media has been following recent developments here in Macedonia, and from diplomatic sources they have reported that the International Community are preparing to introduce sanctions on Macedonian politicians, freeze their assets abroad and impose travel bans.
