The United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) called on the President of the United States Congress, Paul Ryan, the leader of the majority in Congress, Kevin McCarthy, to immediately relieve Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (a Republican representative from California) as Chairman of the Subcommittee on European Affairs, because of his recent statement in an interview with “Vision Plus” in Tirana.
The UMD say Rohrabacher has “once again embarrassed himself, his constituents, and his party, with deeply irresponsible attacks against the Republic of Macedonia” and emphasized that members of Congress should not instigate conflicts in the Balkans which may align with ethno-nationalist agendas supported by warmongering politicians in the Balkans.
“For the current Chairman of the Subcommittee for Europe, Eurasia and Emerging Threats to openly call for the partition of a staunch U.S. ally is both ethically questionable and extremely dangerous. Macedonia is working hard to overcome the long-standing destabilizing effects of a violent 2001 invasion at the hands of ethnic Albanian terrorists. Gradual progress toward stability in the region has always been predicated on international guarantees of the inviolability of the country’s borders. For a high-ranking Republican official to openly advocate for Macedonia’s destruction not only seriously undermines U.S. policy in Southeast Europe, but it also undermines U.S. President Donald J. Trump”, said UMD President Metodija Koloski.
Otherwise, during an interview with television “Vision plus” in Albania, Rohrabacher said that “Macedonia is not a state” and that “Kosovars and Albanians from Macedonia should become part of Kosovo,” and “the other part of Macedonia should become part of Bulgaria or any other country to which they believe they belong to”.
