The negotiations for the accession of Macedonia can end in January and at the start of 2019, the country can become a NATO member, said at a press conference the General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg.
– We all followed closely the results from the referendum in the Republic of Macedonia. I welcome the achieved approval for the Prespa Agreement. Skopje should decide on its next steps – stressed the Secretary General.
He said that NATO is ready to welcome Macedonia as NATO’s 30th member.
That can only happen if the Prespa Agreement is implemented. The membership negotiations have begun and we expect them to be finished by January next year. When the implementation of the Agreement is over, we can sign a protocol with the country. At the start of next year, the country can join the Alliance. I call upon each party to demonstrate responsibility and to seize this opportunity – stressed Stoltenberg.
