Statement of President Gjorgje Ivanov that name dispute enters a new and different phase and that something changed with the new Greek government, aroused interest in Greece.
According to some Greek media, with this statement, Ivanov exalts and praises the government of Alexis Tsipras.
“The President of FYROM praises government of SYRIZA”, “Ivanov exalts SYRIZA” are just some of the titles in the Greek media that only technically report the news and the statement of President Ivanov, indirectly hinting that our country favors this government unlike others, hoping to have a more open attitude to resolve the name dispute.
Attacks to SYRIZA for greater openness and softer attitudes towards the name dispute are not a novelty in Greece.
While in power, New Democracy openly used them to try to reduce the rating of the party. However, SYRIZA has repeatedly stated that it stands behind the agreed red lines that are agreed by the majority of the Greek political parties, i.e. a compound name with geographic determinant for general use. Few weeks ago, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kodzias announced confidence building measures, which, according to him, will mainly be for suppression of irredentist tendencies of the Macedonian government, which Kodzias assessed as a bigger problem than the problem with the name.
