Drama in Greece over the choice of candidate for President

-

Election of the President of Greece has turned into a real drama. The failing to choose Stavros Dimas led to early elections and a political earthquake, and now the Government of Alexis Tsipras cannot agree on a candidate for President.
After several hours waiting for an address to the people of Tsipras, scheduled for yesterday, and on which, was to be released the name of the candidate for President, Prime Minister’s office suddenly canceled it.
Government spokesman Gabriel Sakelaridis announced that the decision has been rescheduled for Tuesday.
The candidate will be announced after the meeting of the Euro Group and the joint session of the parliamentary group of SYRIZA on Tuesday. Parliament will vote for the president in an emergency procedure on Wednesday.
Although the decision was considered as passed, Tsipras met with coalition partner Kamenos Panos, who came out and announced that there will be no problem with the presidential candidate, however, when the camera of the national television went in to record the address, it ultimately did not happen.
The main reason for the delay in the announcement of the presidential candidate is assessed to be disagreements in SYRIZA regarding the personal choice of Tsipras Dimitris Avramopoulos to be the candidate.
The name of the Greek Commissioner and former FM is heard as definite choice of Tsipras and media yesterday announced him as the new president with certainty. However, it seems that Avramopoulos was not approved by members of SYRIZA.
