The citizens of the city of Gevgelija will have to make a decision whether they are “for” or “against” the decision for opening new mines on the territory of its municipality. As was announced by the media, in the past period, the government has approved concessions to international companies for geological explorations on two locations in the municipality of Gevgelija i.e. on the declivities of mountаин Kožuf.
The Civil association’s “Spas za nas” (Salvation for Us) activists which started the referendum initiative are fearing that the detailed geological explorations will be made with the use of explosives and enormous mechanisation, and during the process of separation of the gold from the ore a cyanide will be used which will have a negative effect on the environment and the people’s health.
