MES: The Ombudsman misinterpreted the letter regarding wearing headscarves in schools

-

The Ministry of Education and Science (MES) says that they have not sent any letter to the director of the Primary School “Bratstvo i Edinstvo” in Ohrid, saying that pupils (schoolgirls) wearing headscarves cannot attend classes, for which the Ombudsman today has condemned this procedure by the MES.

Therefore, they find that their letter has been misinterpreted.

“A parent of two schoolgirls from “Bratstvo i Edinstvo” primary school in Ohrid requested an opinion from the Ministry of Education and Science regarding the case with his daughters who are not allowed to attend school because of wearing a veil. The Ministry of Education and Science in the reply to the letter pointed out that in accordance with the Law on Primary Education, primary education is obligatory. He also pointed out that it is with the authority of the Director to organize, plan and manage the work of the primary school and he is responsible for exercising the rights and obligations of the pupils. It is astonishing the misinterpretation of the MES’s letter that gives permission for any behavior of the Director or the parent of the pupils”, the MES said in a statement.
