Thimonier: Both journalists and diplomats must fight for the freedom of expression

-

Both journalists and diplomats have a responsibility for democracy and for the fight for freedom of expression, and in that fight one must not be silent, said French Ambassador Christian Thimonier at today’s promotion of the publication “Freedom of expression through the practice of the European Court of Human Rights”, by Dr. Mirjana Lazarova-Trajkovska, held at the Journalists Club in Skopje.

“From the very sad day of December 24th, 2012, we passed a difficult but successful path and experiences, and it can serve as material for thinking about evolution and seeking democracy. The book by Dr. Mirjana Lazarova-Trajkovska is a reminder of the huge responsibility that you, as journalists carry, but also the lack of courage of others. At the same time, it serves as a lesson for us not to keep diplomats silent when it comes to violations of laws and fundamental rights and to say clearly and loudly that something is unacceptable”, said Thimonier .

The book focuses on the case “Selmani and Others v. the Republic of Macedonia” at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg (ECHR), as the first case from the Republic of Macedonia for the impediment of freedom of expression in relation to the violent expulsion of journalists from the Parliament of the Republic Macedonia on December 24th, 2012.
