The War in Ukraine Is Not the Work of Joe Biden and the “Deep State”

The war in Ukraine, which began in 2014 with Russia’s annexation of Crimea and escalated in 2022 with the invasion of the entire territory of Ukraine, started on the orders of the supreme commander of the Russian army, President Vladimir Putin. Joe Biden and the “deep state” certainly did not plan, prepare, or order the invasion, as claimed in the post, writes Truthmeter.mk.

Under the content-sharing agreement between Truthmeter.mk and Meta.mk, we republish the text in full below:

We are fact-checking a post on Facebook which states that:

“…Biden and the Democrats’ deep state is responsible for the war in Ukraine, not Putin…”

The purpose of this text is to debunk these myths with facts and historical context, so as to help the public have a clearer and more accurate picture of the events and the causes of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Historical context and facts

The conflict in Ukraine began in 2014, before Joe Biden even became the President of the United States. Primary causes for the conflict are the Russian annexation of Crimea and Russia’s support for separatist forces in Eastern Ukraine. This happened during the administration of President Barack Obama, not during Biden’s administration. Although there are some similarities between the administrations of Biden and Obama due to their shared party and some key individuals, they are still distinct administrations with their own unique policies and challenges.

Russia as the aggressor

It was Russia that started the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This decision was made by the Russian state led by President Vladimir Putin. Neither Biden’s “deep state” nor the Democrats can be held accountable for Russia’s decisions and military actions, which had clearly been prepared and planned over a longer period. The American administration, along with some NATO allies, received intelligence information and, when confirmed, informed their allies and the leadership of Ukraine in December 2023.

In addition, the post frequently mentions “Kievan Rus.”

KIEVAN RUS CANNOT BE IN NATO!

KIEVAN RUS WAS THE RED LINE FOR RUSSIA, along with any reasonable (and informed) person…

Is “Kievan Rus” an appropriate term?

“Kievan Rus” is not an accurate term in the current context of the ongoing war in Ukraine. This term refers to a medieval East Slavic state that existed from the late 9th to the mid-13th century.

Kievan Rus was a federation of East Slavic tribes that formed around the city of Kyiv. It is known as the predecessor of today’s Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus and played a significant role in the history of these peoples. Kievan Rus disintegrated in the 13th century after the Mongol invasion.

In the context of contemporary events, the term “Kievan Rus” is not appropriate to describe the current events in Ukraine. Today’s Ukraine is an independent state with its sovereignty, formed in 1991, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Therefore, the use of the term “Kievan Rus” to describe modern events in Ukraine is historically inappropriate and can create confusion. There are differences between Kievan Rus, contemporary Ukraine and today’s Russia, and it is important to distinguish between them.

Conclusion

The claim that “Biden’s deep state and the Democrats are responsible for the war in Ukraine, not Putin” is unfounded and untrue. While we may not know the underlying motives in detail, it is clear from the facts that Vladimir Putin, along with other Russian authorities, made the decision to commit acts of aggression against Ukraine’s territory in both 2014 and 2022. Additionally, the use of “Kievan Rus” is inappropriate in context of modern Ukraine.

Due to all of the above-mentioned facts referring to the part of the post we have discussed, the post can be evaluated as partially untrue.
