On 26th of April, residents of the Municipality of Centar will have the opportunity to vote in a referendum on the appearance of the City trade center, and the results of the referendum will be binding and must be applied, says Mayor of the Municipality of Centar Andrej Zhernovski.
The question of the referendum will be “Are you for or against the current appearance of the facade of City trade center in Skopje”, and the citizens will declare “for” or “against”.
– Now we go with a proposal to the Council of the Municipality of Centar, and if the Council decides, then we will announce a referendum which is to be held on 26th of April from 7 am to 7 pm. For it to be successful, it should have a turnout of 50 percent plus one of the registered voters in the Municipality of Centar. According to legal obligations, the session should be held by the end of this month. The referendum will cost two to three million denars and those costs are provided in the municipal budget, which has already been passed – says Zhernovski.
He added that the referendum is the clearest, most direct and most authentic form of civil decision and a great opportunity for correction of all decisions taken by the government, if those decisions are controversial and damaging to citizens.
Association of Architects said they are satisfied that the initiative “I love GTC” results in legal and democratic mechanism, for which they hope to be successful.
– We have a vision and we want this building to be restored and nurtured, but its authenticity to maintain because it is part of the spirit and culture of the place. Our proposal is to develop an appropriate architectural design with high expertise and we don’t reject renewal or reconstruction of the building, which is part of our everyday lives – says Danica Pavlovska of the Association of Architects.
