The Gender Equality Platform calls for more women to participate in local elections

The Gender Equality Platform calls on candidates for the local elections to commit to gender balance.
They recall that in 1996 and 2009, no woman was elected mayor, and in the last local elections, in 2013, 19 mayors more were elected rather than female mayors (76 men versus four women).

“Despite the declarative efforts, we remind that in the composition of the new government only four ministerial positions are women. Out of a total of 67 appointed officials and directors, government officials and government departments under the authority of the Government, only five are women. We demand from the political parties gender balance in the candidate lists in the local elections and in all subsequent elections, as a key condition for greater representation of women in political functions, and thus in the equal representation of the interests of all citizens in the country. It’s time for 50:50”, said the Platform for Gender Equality in a statement.
