The Catalan issue should be resolved within the framework of the Constitution of Spain, Dimitrov believes

The Catalan issue should be resolved within the framework of the Constitution of Spain, said Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikola Dimitrov.

“The events related to the referendum in Catalonia are worrying. Our position is that this issue can be resolved only within the constitutional order of Spain and through political dialogue. The issue is too complex for expressing any other position at this time”, said Dimitrov.

However, the minister did not answer what the position of Macedonia would be, if Catalonia declares independence, noting that he does not answer hypothetical questions about a delicate topic, especially regarding an important member of the European Union.

Today, the European Commission confirmed that the Catalan independence referendum was illegal under Spanish law.

The Catalan government previously said 90.9 % of citizens went to the referendum on independence and declared themselves to be independent from Spain.

Catalonia has a population of 5,340,000 with voting rights, which means that 42,3% voted in the referendum, which means, 2,020,144 voted “for” independence.
