MFA: Bulgaria Should Respect International Proceudres for Erecting Monuments

Honoring victims of armed conflicts in our region is part of the culture of reconciliation and above all, a humane gesture, said the Macedonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, adding that the memorial tomb of Kajmakcalan was illegally placed.

“We expect our friends from the Republic of Bulgaria to respect internationally accepted procedures for erecting memorial monuments. At the same time, we expect institutions to discourage all involved who illegally placed landmarks on the territory of another state, which then may be targeted for acts of violence or create negative feelings among citizens”, reads a statement from the Macedonian Foreign Ministry.

The statement also noted that it is important to mention that the Republic of Macedonia maintains good relations with all its neighbors, and should promote successful models of reconciliation and celebrations that exist in Europe, instead of erecting one-sided landmarks or celebrations in a neighboring country.

The ministry pointed out that the conflicts and atrocities of the past of any country should be a motive to strengthen future cooperation in the region, and joint efforts for the full integration of the region, which is the most successful peace project in Europe.
