Garrett: By obstructing the SPO there will be no sustainable resolution to the political crisis

No one should stand in the way of investigations of the Special Public Prosecutor because otherwise there will be no sustainable resolution of the political crisis, said Ambassador of Great Britain to Macedonia Charles Garrett, in his comment on the SPO’s investigation into the Administration of Security and Counterintelligence (UBK).

Garrett, without commenting on specific details of the investigation, stressed the importance of the SPO’s work and pointed out that the institution was established by an agreement made between the four major political parties and was supported unanimously in Parliament.

“I am not going to comment on the specific details of the investigation. But I will stress how important the work of the Special Prosecutor’s Office is. They’ve been tasked with the difficult job of investigating the allegations in the wiretapped materials and establishing whether there is a case to answer. The SPO was agreed by all four leaders of the main political parties and unanimously supported in Parliament. So no one should stand in the way of this important work – because unless these allegations are properly investigated, there cannot be a sustainable resolution to the political crisis”, stated the British Ambassador.

The US Embassy in Skopje, previously stated that the Special Prosecutor’s Office must be able to conduct a full and independent inquiry, without interference, and state institutions and political parties must cooperate.

At the same time, the Delegation from the European Union in the country, urged all sides to adhere to the agreement, and not to obstruct the work of the Special Prosecutor’s Office.
