Acting upon UNESCO recommendations the government seeks alternative routes for the railway and a list of all illegally built objects in Ohrid area

At the 139th session, the Government adopted the information for acting upon UNESCO’s recommendations and decided to continue with meeting of UNESCO’s recommendationts and decisions for the purpose of keeping the status of a world heritage of Ohrid region’s natural and cultural heritage.

“The government set the task to the Vice Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, in cooperation with the prime minister’s office to form a working group consisting of officials from all relevant institutions that will be acting upon UNESCO’s objections for analysis and an alternative route for the railway line along Corridor 8 including the route starting from highway A2 Trebenishta – Struga according to the findings of the Reactive monitoring mission and the relevant recommendations by UNESCO.

The proposed solutions should be submitted at the Government no sooner than by the 15th of January 2020. The ministry of Transportation and Communications was given the task along with the National Park “Galichica” and the municipalities of Ohrid, Struga and Debarca to make an inventory of illegal buildings in the region and to submit it at the government by the 1st of September this year. The Ministries of Environment and the Planning and Culture, were given the task of preparing a draft plan for managing with the natural and cultural heritage in the Ohrid region that will be in accordance with the UNESCO’s Center for World Heritage, and the plan will be submitted at the Government for adoption by December 2019” says the Government’s press release.

They also suggested the municipalities of Ohrid and Struga to meet UNESCO’s proposals in order for the Ohrid region still to be under UNESCO’s protection.
