Government proposes state of emergency be extended until June 2019

The government has proposed that the state of emergency on the southern and northern border be extended until June 30, 2019, in order to prevent the entry and transit of migrants on the territory of Macedonia.

The draft decision on amending the original decision for the approval of the extension of the deadline for the existence of a state of emergency due to the increased volume of entry and migration of migrants across the territory of Macedonia has already been submitted to Parliament, where it should be reviewed by the Steering Committee and be voted on at a plenary session.

The purpose of the continuation of the decision is to ensure continuity in the performance of activities by the Army and the security forces of the Ministry of Interior, in the function of securing, protecting and guarding the state border.

The state of emergency is due to a surge of migrants on the Macedonian border and was introduced in the summer of 2015, and has since been continued.
