Fake news about migrants are causing hatred in Serbia

The Commissariat for Refugees and Migration s in Serbia has issued a warning yesterday that fake news is spread on social networks about an alleged attack by a group of immigrants on a 17-year-old girl at the center of Belgrade.

“This is not the first case of spreading fake news on social networks about migrants in Serbia. Social networks are used as a place for freely expressing hatred and xenophobia towards these people, and the main weapon are the fake news – starting from granting money to migrants, 10 eur per person, to signing agreements with them for a permanent residence in Serbia” announced the Serbian Commissariat.

The Serbian Ministry of Interior disputed the information published on the social networks that a group of migrants has raped a 17-year-old girl in the center of Belgrade in front of passers-by and stated that in the area of Belgrade a case like that was not reported and evidenced.

The Ministry stated that the police, on a warrant issued by the Special Prosecution Office for High Tech Crime, will conduct official hearings with the persons that have published these claims on social networks.
