Chavkov and Kurz visit the border zone at the Macedonia – Greece border

Minister of Interior Mitko Chavkov and the Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz, who is visiting the country, will visit the town Gevgelija which was in the focus of the international media because of the unfolding crisis with Middle Eastern refugees.

“Today, August 24, at 10:30 in Gevgelija, the Minister of Interior Mitko Chavkov will receive the Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sebastian Kurz so that they can both have a look at the ongoing situation at the border with Greece,” says in the announcement released by the Ministry of Interior (MVR).

About 5000 migrants entered Macedonia on Saturday and quickly found taxis, buses, minibuses or used the train, to head to the border crossing to Serbia.

On Thursday, Macedonian authorities closed the border with Greece to prevent massive pouring of migrants from Greece after the Government had declared an emergency situation along the border zone.

In securing the border and illegal routes, the Macedonian security forces used stun grenades to prevent a dash by the refugees who were trying to break the police line. The reaction by the police generated sharp criticism from domestic and international humanitarian organizations.
