Žbogar: The country took the opportunity and implemented agenda for start of negotiations

-

The European Commission has recommended the start of negotiations with North Macedonia. I congratulate you on your efforts and dedication, but also the sacrifices you have made in the past period.

This was stated by EU Ambassador Samuel Žbogar at today’s press conference at the headquarters of the European Union Delegation in Skopje, on the occasion of the EU Progress Report for membership.

“What we present today is not just an ordinary progress report, but a report on the fulfillment of conditions set by EU member states in June, last year. European Commissioner Johannes Hahn said clearly that the country used the opportunity offered and implemented the ambitious agenda set up”, said Žbogar.

He added that the government has made efforts in the processes to involve all stakeholders, and Parliament had played a constructive role.

The EU Ambassador pointed out that the country’s dossier continues to improve both in the investigation and prosecution of cases of wide corruption.

Regarding the freedom of the media and expression, he said that the country continues to improve.

“However, the state should make lasting efforts to improve the independence of the public diffuser as well as its financial sustainability. It is essential that public services, the political elite, demonstrate a high level of tolerance in terms of criticism regarding the conservation of freedom of expression”, added Žbogar.

The report says that good progress has been made in addressing the reform priorities and recommendations contained in the Venice Commission and the Priebe Report.
