Zaev: There will be zero tolerance for electoral crimes

-

I am sending a message to government and state institutions, that there will be zero tolerance for electoral crime, said Prime Minister Zoran Zaev at today’s conference, “Separating the state from political parties” organized by the Citizens Association “Most”.

“The Government of Macedonia is building institutions for the citizens, and it’s aim of the upcoming local elections is to protect citizens from abuse from parties. Public officials will not abuse their responsibilities for party purposes. There will be no blackmail, threats, and intimidation for party purposes. The separation of party from state was promised by the new government. Our priority is to hold fair and democratic elections. The government will take measures that will prevent candidates for mayor from using state funds”, Zaev said.

The head of the European Union Delegation, Samuel Žbogar, urged political party leaders to use the local elections to show democratic values.

“It is primary for political leaders that conduct campaigns for the elections, to conduct them without violence, intimidation and without ethnic tensions. Leaders have to use the electoral process to demonstrate democratic values. The elections will be a step forward in the European integration”, says Žbogar.

In the past there were enough examples of disrespecting the principle of the separation of state from party, said Darko Aleksov, the executive director of “Most”, who said that everyone wants to see that this government can do things differently.

“Any violations of the principle of the separation of state from party, should be investigated and appropriately sanctioned”, added Aleksov.
