Zaev confirms meeting with Chancellor Merkel but won’t reveal time or location

-

Prime Minister Zoran Zaev today announced another meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and has received confirmation but he still hasn’t revealed when and where the meeting will take place.

“I’m glad that a message was sent to confirm the exact time for the meeting with Chancellor Merkel. This success is a success for Chancellor Merkel and EU member states, who were here to encourage the referendum and provided both political and economic support”, said Prime Minister Zoran Zaev after a joint press conference with Vice Prime Minister Kocho Angjusev.

Regarding the information that Merkel disagrees on giving Macedonia a starting date for negotiations, Zaev said that for those who are well acquainted with the situation, this information is old and that talks at the highest level including with MPs are still ongoing.

He pointed out that what’s most important are the decisions and information by the EU’s General Affairs Council (GAC) who are scheduled to hold a meeting from 18-21st of June and again by the end of July.

“The European Council is the one who will make the final decision however, it will firstly be foreshadowed through the GAC. Let’s not miss those deadlines”, said Zaev.

The Prime Minister said that if we are not granted a date to start negotiations, he announced that he will return the mandate and this will determine whether there will be new elections or just a reshuffle. The reshuffle would take place at the end of June and at the next session of government, there will be certain changes in the directorial positions.
