Driving over 50 kilometres will result in fines from 10 to 400 euros

-

Today in Parliament the Law on Safety and Traffic on the roads, was finally passed, where it states that it is compulsory to have your head lights on while driving from dusk to dawn and during the day if visibility is poor.

Motorcycle lights are required to be on during the day and night, and cyclists must have the appropriate high visibility clothing.

Drivers who do not respect these rules, will have to pay a fine of 15 euros during the day and 35 euros at night, and will receive 15 negative point on their license. For cyclists the fine is 50 euros.

The Law of Article 35 states that on a public road in a populated area, drivers can not exceed the speed limit which is 50 kilometres per hour. Failure to abide by the new laws, citizens will be fined depending on the excess speed, the penalties range from 10 to 400 euros.

Driving 50 kilometres over the speed limit, or 100 kilometers per hour in a populated area, the fine is 400 euros, or 65 negative points. Also, despite the financial penalty, the driver will be banned from driving a motor vehicle from six to twelve months. The penalty for driving at speeds of 30 to 50 kph over the speed limit is 300 euros or 50 negative points, and a driving ban of three months up to one year. If someone is caught driving at speeds of 10 to 30 kph over the limit, they will pay a fine of 45 euros or receive 25 negative points, and finally the fine for driving 10 kph over the permitted speed is 10 euros, or 10 negative points

Liliana Popovska from the DOM (Democratic Restoration of Macedonia) believes that the law should be withdrawn and a series of public hearings should make a new law.

“No suggestions that helmets and vest do not help save cyclists lives when there are no cycling lanes, every day see’s yet another accident featuring a cyclist, and that is because there are no designated cycle lanes”, Ms Popovska said.
