Red angry lion on a gold – yellow shield, and mural crown in the form of a fortress at the top, is the proposal for a new Coat of Arms, which was adopted by the Government this afternoon and is soon to go to a major debate at the Assembly, reports TV Alpha, citing its own sources.
As the television reported, the reasons that are explained in the proposal for a new Coat of Arms, is that it is a return to historical symbols and that Macedonia and Belarus currently are the only countries in Europe that have Soviet-inspired Coat of Arms.
The new design of the red lion was based on historical Coats of Arms, illustrations of Verland from 1481 and Baroad’s Roll of Arms from 1581, which, by the stenography of Vitezovik in 1694 and Zherafovik in 1741, became the Coat of Arms of Macedonia.
Golden – yellow crown adorned with pearls and rubies should symbolize the republican organization of the country.
The new crest with a lion on it doesn’t only represents Macedonians, because, in the past, the lion was part of all the crest of the Albanian feudal lords, hence the emblem should be unifying, reports Alpha.
The quote of part of the proposal, which, according to television Alpha, was adopted by the Government this afternoon, states that “with the adoption of this crest, Macedonia will become a part of the European family as a country with European aspirations, which cares about its past, but also for its future, by promoting unity and connecting itself to a symbol which bears no division, on any grounds, but rather creates unity of all who live in this region.”
In order to change the Coat of Arms, the Constitution should be amended, i.e. a two-thirds and Badinter majority is needed, which, according to Alpha’s sources, was already agreed between the coalition partners.
