US Embassy: SPO must be able to conduct a full inquiry

-

The Special Public Prosecutor must it be able to conduct a full and independent inquiry, without interference, and the state institutions and political parties need to cooperate, said the US Embassy in Skopje to “Meta” in connection with the SPO’s investigation into the Administration of Security and Counterintelligence (UBK).

They pointed out that by establishing accountability for the illegal wiretapping tapping is one of the key steps in ending the country’s political crisis.

“The Special Prosecutor must be able to conduct a thorough, independent investigation free from delays or obstructions; and government institutions and political parties should cooperate in those processes. Under the Pržino Agreement, establishing accountability for the unauthorized wiretaps and allegations of government abuse is a critical step to ending the political crisis and toward NATO and EU membership”, stated the US Embassy.

Earlier, the EU Delegation to Macedonia urged all parties to adhere to the agreement and not to obstruct the work of the Special Prosecutor’s Office.

Yesterday, the Special Public Prosecutor entered the UBK premises with two court orders requiring the inspection of the documentation and the data systems for the monitoring of communications.

Special Prosecutor Katica Janeva said that cooperation with the management of UBK had been “very difficult”.

The team of prosecutors and investigators are still in the Administration of Security and Counterintelligence.
