Two draft amendments for Constitutional changes adopted, while the debate continues today

-

The debate on the two remaining draft amendments for constitutional changes, in accordance with the Prespa Agreement, continues today in the Parliament of the Republic of Macedonia.

Last night, MPs adopted the draft amendments with 65 votes in favor, 18 against and 8 abstentions with which the decisions of ASNOM will be replaced with the Declaration of ASNOM and the Ohrid Framework Agreement is installed. Earlier, MPs adopted another draft amendment with 67 votes in favor. This draft amendment envisages the change to the name Republic of Macedonia with the Republic of North Macedonia.

Eight MPs from the opposition supported the opening of the Constitution, conditioned by the forgiveness and reconciliation process.

In the third draft amendment concerning the guarantees of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of neighbouring countries, it will read “the Republic respects the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of the neighbouring countries”, and the fourth and last refers to expatriates and reads the Republic protects the rights and interests of its nationals living or residing abroad and supports their ties to the motherland, while not interfering with the sovereign rights of other states or their internal affairs.

After the draft amendments are adopted, the Government, as the proposer of the amendments, is set to organize a public hearing.
