-

The number of pedestrians killed in Skopje has increased compared to last year, according to the latest analysis by the National Council for Safety and Traffic on the roads.

Figures show for the first six months of 2015 there were 20 deaths, unlike last year, when there were 15. Most of those killed were pedestrians. In the first eight months, however, counting both July and August, a total of 27 deaths in Skopje where 15 of them were pedestrians.

On average in Macedonia 160-170 people are killed a year on the roads, and more than 40% of traffic accidents happen in the capital, Skopje.

The number of accidents resulting in serious consequences in the first half of the year (1.727) is almost identical to last year when the number was 1.731. However, deaths on the road have risen by 30 percent.

Statistics show that in 2014 in Macedonia, 11 children lost their lives in traffic accidents. However in the first six months of this year, 12 children have already lost their lives.

In the eight months of this year there have been 98 victims, which is almost at the same pace of 2014.
The National Council for Safety and Traffic aims to reduce the number of deaths by traffic accidents like EU member states. And is it’s less than hundred victims per year on Macedonian roads.

Today the Minister for Internal Affairs Mitko Chavkov will discuss traffic safety with the Mayor of Skopje Koce Trajanovski.

On Saturday, at 13 pm, the civil campaign “Mr Mayor, give us back our streets” will hold a peaceful protest honouring the death of 13 year old David who was killed riding his bike, and all others tragically killed on the streets of Skopje.

The protest will start on boulevard “Ilinden” in front of the ‘Lotus Flower’ fountain and will end outside the office of Mayor Koce Trajanov. The campaign have directly identified the Mayor as most responsible for the sinister numbers of deaths and the numerous accidents on the streets of Skopje.
