Potholes, sunken tarmac and lack of hard shoulders for emergency stops is the current condition of the Tetovo-Gostivar Motorway, which is one of the busiest motorways in the country. Citizens pay 60 denars toll (one way), and in return the get a motorway in bad condition.  According to the information from the Public Enterprise “Makedonijapat”, average annual daily traffic on this motorway in 2017 was 13.087 vehicles.

The Public Enterprise for State Roads (PE for State Roads) says that the idea for reconstruction of the motorway and its expansion with an additional emergency lane in the two directions was mentioned for the first time last year. This idea should be realized through a project documentation, elaborated in the Plan for public procurement for this year.

“It is planned that in 2019 the most suitable bidder for implementing the project documentation for reconstruction and rehabilitation of the state road A2 (section Tetovo – Gostivar at the level of standard motorway) will be chosen. After completing to project, financial means for the constructions will be planed, as well”, is the statement “Meta” got from the PE for State Roads.

The route between Tetovo and Gostivar was the first motorway section of the Corridor 8 that was constructed on Macedonian territory. The section 22 kilometres long was built with loan from the World Bank, and this motorway was put into use in October 1996. From that moment till now, no significant construction works have been done for its reconstruction or upgrading.
