Thessaloniki under siege by Greek farmers

-

Greek farmers today will “occupy” Thessaloniki. Protests from the road blockades will move to the centre of Thessaloniki, where tonight the great Fair of Agriculture “Agrotiki” opens. This way Farmers can demonstrate their anger and dissatisfaction with the government’s decisions not to deviate from the implementation of the Agreement on pension and health insurance and new laws that would abolish numerous benefits for farmers, such as lower taxes and cheaper fuel for tractors and machines.
At the Greek-Macedonian border at the crossing Bogorodica, more than 180 tractors still remain performing occasional blockades and stopping the operation of the border. There is also a blockade at the border crossing Dojran – Dojran, where they have set up a total of 450 tractors, which are in the area of Kilkis.
There are many blockades being set up around the entrance of Thessaloniki, including the road to the airport and to Halkidiki.
There are also many blockades around Greece, even farmers from Athens are now threatening to block the airport in Athens, which could potentially disrupt a huge number of domestic and international travellers.
